Move along! There’s nothing to see here!

2021
Material: Sealed card board box (28×17.4×10 cm) with six coins and three matchsticks inside and an X-ray print of the box.

The work uses three matchsticks and six coins (swiss currency) arranged to recreate the well known symbol in Morse code – ‘SOS’. The word calls for attention, but in a world that seems to move more and more towards authoritarian tendencies, the title contradicts the artworks by suggesting the visitor not to even bother to look at it, let alone understand its significance.

The title of this work, “Move along! There’s nothing to see here!” is a phrase used by the philosopher Jacques Rancière to illustrate the notion of a ‘police logic’, where the purpose of that logic is to create and maintain order. It thus implies that people are supposed to follow the assigned positions/work and not to stop, see or think.

‘Kunst Macht sichtbar’ (Art makes visible):
The 125th year of the discovery of X-Rays coincided with the 125th year of existence of the Swiss Artists’ association, ‘Visarte’. The Swiss artist, Andreas Weber, conceptualised the project ‘Kunst Macht sichtbar’ (Art makes visible) to mark this occasion. His project stems from Paul Klee’s concept that ‘Art does not reproduce the visible but makes visible, what one does not see / understand’. Andreas invited 125 Swiss based artists to create a work inside a regular Swiss-Post cardboard packaging box and send it to him. The box is then X-rayed and the resultant image / art works were displayed in the ensuing exhibition. I am grateful to him for the invite and humbled to be a part of this project.

Andreas Weber, exhibited the entire project at the following exhibitions:
“La-boîte-non-ouverte”, Grosse Regionale, Kunst(Zeug)Haus Rapperswil. 2021
