Divide

Performance – 2014

An interventional performance with identity markers.

The chairs in the room are randomly marked with three labels – Reserved for Men, Reserved for Women and Reserved for VIP – before people came in for a talk that the artist had to deliver. The labels turn into ‘insidious commands’ and push people to conform to certain implied identities (just like in routine life).  The visitors are forced to acknowledge and engage with the commands merely by their presence and prominence (even when they are completely useless). The work was in line with the artist’s quest of ‘identities’.

The talk ‘The artist is (or may not be) present here’ was based on the experiences of the 14 Rooms at Art Basel 2014.
