A discarded machine is repurposed with electronics and a wireless audio system, into a calculator to measure ‘colonial burden’. An LED panel displays a series of instructions (in English, German and French). The machine is activated when a visitor steps on it. The load is calculated within seconds and announced via a hidden audio system. A pair of animated eyes emerge on the LED panel as if to communicate silently and encourage the visitor to reflect upon their own location in the geo-socio-economic matrix of this world. The work provokes questions around the notion of a colonial burden – who carries whose burden and do the numbers calculated by the machine carry a different meaning for each person?
The installation uses a basic digital technology (nAI). The final work shown in 2025, is the result of a continuous and slow evolution of this installation since 2021.
